Civil Rights Figure Julian Bond Dead at 75

Julian Bond, a pivotal member of the civil rights movement and former chairman of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has died.

According to the Associated Press, the news was confirmed by the Southern Law Poverty Center, a nonprofit legal advocacy organization he founded in 1971. Bond passed away in his Florida home after battling an unknown illness. The civil rights leader began his career at Morehouse College by founding the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee leading protests over equal rights for black people. He also went on to work with other civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. After he was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, he was refused a seat by white members for his beliefs. One year later, he was able to take his seat with the support of the first amendment.

He went on serve 20 years in the two houses of the legislature, helping to fund sickle cell anemia testing and providing low-income housing in Georgia. He continued to speak out for civil rights and gay rights with Coretta Scott King.

President Obama released a statement about Bond Sunday morning.

"Justice and equality was the mission that spanned his life – from his leadership of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, to his founding role with the Southern Poverty Law Center, to his pioneering service in the Georgia legislature and his steady hand at the helm of the N.A.A.C.P.," the president said. "Julian Bond helped change this country for the better. And what better way to be remembered than that."

Bond is survived by wife, Pamela Horowitz and his five children, Phyllis Jane Bond-McMillan, Horace Mann Bond II, Michael Julian Bond, Jeffrey Alvin Bond, and Julia Louise Bond; his brother, James Bond; and his sister, Jane Bond Moore. He was 75 years-old.

Producer Spotlight: J-Cuse (Indianapolis, IN)

I wanted to do a producer spotlight section on my blog to shout out all the producers who are doing their thing. This particular producer J-Cuse, made me want to delve into his catalog after hearing a myriad of hits and asking "who produced this"? Same answer, J Cuse. His sound is unique, he does some sampling but you can hear the depth in his musical background through the rest of his arrangements. His range is as impressive as it gets, from the 90s "Boom Bap" sound, to today's "trap music" and everywhere in between. He has been making his bones producing for Midwest sensation Mark Battles and Derek Luh but has a lot of good music production credit under his belt. A line up of artists and production includes: Mark Battles ft Curren$y (Fly America) "My Shoes", Mark Battles ft Derek Luh "Hustle Back", G.B. The Flyboi "Perk N Twerk", Dizzy Wright, Euroz, and more. His work ethic is crazy and I look to see even more major placements from this prodigy. 2015 looks to be a promising year in this producer's future, J-Cuse!!

I had to think about the #1 selection this year because previously all winners had been rappers and we have a lot very talented ones in the state. But I look at this kids talent and I asked myself 'if Michael Jackson' was out today would he garner this recognition?' And the answer was HELL YES! What you are looking at is a prodigy, the next of the NEXT. He has groomed in singing, performing, acting, and dancing. He has been featured on Disney, SyFy Channel, Broadway's "The Lion King", TV roles on Cold Case and Harry's Law. His description on Wikipedia says "PERFORMER". He is now signed to #AtlanticRecords and in 2014 was featured on songs with Sage The Gemini and toured with his best friend Diggy Simmons. Yeah THAT Diggy. We could be looking at the next Chris Brown, Trey Songz, August Alsina but I think we are seeing the first Trevor Jackson. Being from Indiana, what a name.
