In 2019, we got his FIRST body of musical art titled "Foreign Dreams" that contains 7 tracks of mood music to set it off right. It's refreshing to listen to his music as he combines much of today's rhyme patterns with the soul of the 60s in his music. As I listened to this project my first thought was "only 7 songs?". After listening to the project you definitely want more but understand that this is the magic of his movement. Giving fans just enough of A'ron Easton to want more. I was impressed with the multitude of sounds and feelings throughout the project and definitely wanted to get with my wife and get Saki and Sushi afterwards. You can hear the polish in the songwriting and the overall touch that he has in his craft.

The first song 4-0 took me back to the 90s and early 2000s and the crooning that we heard from updated acts such as Jeremih and Weeknd. This song has a dope track as do most of the songs on the project. That's one thing that stands out immediately is all of the tracks are QUALITY. I love the bounce and silky smooth delivery on this song. The next song "Asian" is EASILY the stand out track of the album. This song I have re winded over 100 times since hearing the pre copy. The hook is nearly flawless and gives you the feeling it's meant to convey. Love. Happiness. A'ron asks "Is You Mine, Is You Right, Asian Right, Asian Life, Saki Vibes". My only problem with the song is it's TOO SHORT. I would've loved to hear a 2nd verse and draw the song out over 3mins. It's that good. The title track "Foreign Dreams" has an old school R Kelly TP2 feel. (No R Kelly lol) It has the updated drum patterns and "Migo whistles" that this generation goes crazy for. The song is put together well and also is a mood setter in the bedroom. "In A Minute" produced by M4ck is also a very dope track. This song has a feel of Chris Brown, Mike Jackson, and Weeknd put together (Yeah I said it.) This song has a lot of commercial appeal because of the flow and upbeat tempo. It also changes the tone of the album from bedroom bangers to a mainstream feel. Moving into the next track effortlessly "Peons" comes in with a strong message on the hooks about who is getting to it and who isn't. A'ron flexes his muscle some on this song but the aggressive tones changes the album yet again. The beat complements his flow very well on this song. Bringing up the end of the album is arguably the 2nd best song on the entire album "Sake Vibes". This is another masterpiece of a song. The hook his again almost perfect in tone and mood setting. "You got the Drip baby, you got the drip drip baby" he sings over a dope synth and drum pattern. You can tell this song is written about someone as the realness conveys through it. It also makes me want to take my shoes off, get some bomb shrimp fried rice with my wife and discuss life. One word I notice in his songs a lot is "vibes". And when he tells her it "tastes like Apple Juice" one can definitely relate to the feeling put in those words! LOL

Overall, I really REALLY liked this project. You can tell by the way he puts his songs together and the subject matter, that A'ron Easton's growth is limitless. The one thing that sticks with you is how different each song is and how well the hooks are put together. I anticipate a large response to 2 possibly 3 tracks from this project single wise. The quality of the mixing is really good and it does all of the songs justice. I thought "Pressure" was one of the songs that could have been replaced but it's still a solid effort.

I give this album 4 out of 5 bands.
This was the quote I received from Ray Band$ aka Gary Laners (on Facebook) as we discussed his new album before he sent it to me to review. As we all know Gucci Mane, the megastar from Atlanta, GA who has had a successful multi platinum career has also been credited with discovering ATL's newest crop of "Trap" artists such as Young Thug, Pee Wee Longway, Nicki Minaj, Waka Flocka, and more. From speaking to Ray Bandz not only does he envision himself a successful artist but also an artist that can find the next crop of talent to supply new sounds and waves in Midwest music. In an era of the "Playlist", full length mixtapes have become more and more rare but I am glad to see an artist take time on a body of work and pushing to the public properly. The album has heavy features on it from Indianapolis artists (Murph G, Aron Easton, Tiggy, Mack Timothy, Mula, Young Zo, Pheddi) and many more. I believe this is all part of the plan described in our earlier reading. At first listen, the entire project as a whole definitely sounds updated and "with the times" in terms of production and song structure. All of the beats are quality and the song topics are clear. Sonic-ally, the mixing is good but the entire project sounds low def. This may be a result of sending me an early copy to review but I did notice that the "LIFE" is somewhat taken out of each song due to the muddy quality.

The first song I checked out was Pool Party ft (Murph G and Mula), an ode to the party that we all love the most with bathing suits and barbecue. I really liked the beat and it really set the tone as far as hooks go on the project. That is one thing you will notice that each hook on the project is TOP NOTCH. There are multiple songs and the 808s mixed with the fun hook set up this song to be a single from the project. I can also see a fun visual a la the Tupac "I Get Around" type of feel for this record. It is a little over mixed, with the highs throughout the song but overall I enjoyed the listen. The next record that stood out to me was the R&B feel record "Vibe" feat Aron Easton and Tiggy. This record is a BANGER and immediately jumps out at you with it's song structure and vocals. Aron Easton and Tiggy sound comparable (in skill) to Trey Songz and August Alsina on this record. That is all I could think of as I listened to the tune. The hook again rules this song where feeling the energy and vibe is the main focus. Most of the beats throughout have synth, 808s, and some form of hi hat or snare. There is no mistake that this is a TRAP record all the way through. Another song that I really enjoyed was "Trap Buffet ft Mack Timothy and Murph G. This song's infectious hook and the mixture of Ray and Murph's vocals make this a feel good trap record in the mold of "Broccoli" from D.R.A.M. Most of the verses on the song have the bravado and content that you would expect from a trap record but the melodies they create throughout change the tune and feel. "Trap Buffet" is no different. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish the hooks and verses but that makes the records even more listenable in my opinion. As I moved through the album I really loved the record "All BS" fe Young Zo and Haasan. Both of the featured artists on this record had stand out verses and took the album back in a traditional direction. Unorthodox and often times outright different, Ray Bandz has a lot of range in the way he arranges his work and this record doesn't sound like any other song on the album. The following record and his anticipated single "TBH" has been a local hit for some time now. I believe he included it on this album because it deserves more ears and sound wise it still fits. It's draggy vocals and deep bass make for a record that has the potential to turn the clubs energy around completely, similar to songs "Back that Thang Up" and "Knuck If You Buck". (If you are from the 90s golden era lol) Mack Timothy, an African artist on his "Bandz Squad" label also delivers several noteworthy appearances on this album but the best is on the song "3ways". You really get the different dance-hall feel from his vocals and the whispering in the hook is infectious. There are not any credits as far as producers on my copy but I want to shout out the producer on this record because it stands out and is really a solid track to go along with the vocals. The last 5 records could have probably been left off of the project completely as they seem like filler tracks compared to the rest of the project. This was the only drawback to the project for me.

Overall, I really liked the effort that Ray Band$ put into his latest project. You can tell by the way he puts his songs together and the subject matter, that Ray Band$ continues to show growth as an artist. This is a really solid effort and his first full length project in some time. The one thing that sticks with you is how different each song is and how well the hooks are put together. I anticipate a large response to 2 possibly 3 tracks from this project single wise. I would have liked to have heard a mastered copy, as again most of the songs are muddied and the quality of the song would really stand out with the proper mastering. The quality of the mixing is there and the songs are updated so you are left to wonder "WHAT IF" as you listen to how good the songs COULD be. Finally. what's left to be answered is the question of "what's next?" for Ray Band$. He has entertained meetings with Roc Nation and Konvict Music and also anticipates putting out more music this year. At the end of the day, I like "The New Gucci", I will listen to it again and I look forward to seeing him continue to climb and stay consistent in his grind!

I give this album 3.6 out of 5 bands.

I wanted to write a quick article on the effect of FM radio on today’s music industry. Most people do not know the business or politics behind radio so you will hear a LOUD bell ringing in their voice saying “Why doesn’t the radio support locals more? Why does the radio play the same 6 songs? Who listens to the radio? ” The fact is that radio is still a viable resource in pushing your campaign as a musician. HOWEVER, the radio is the FINAL piece in today’s pecking order when it comes to nurturing and growing an artist’s fanbase. Today’s radio hits have been tested and approved by other media audiences PRIOR to ever receiving airplay. There is something that radio stations do called “research”. They research a record to see how it is performing on platforms like Spotify, Shazzam, and they use polls as well as other methods to find out if the record is viable to play for a commercial audience.

Remember the radio is an ADVERTISING tool first. The money generated from business ads is what brings in most of a stations revenue. The companies advertise based on how many people are listening. If they play a song that makes people turn the channel, guess what? They have LOST advertising power and revenue. THIS is why you hear the same 6 songs in rotation over and over. Not to mention, VERY large budgets (50k +) have been paid to independent radio promoters to get record spins in FM markets. Again, it’s NOT Payola in the sense that most people think. Artists and labels DO NOT PAY radio stations directly. That WOULD break the law. There are what each major label has (and independent labels should strive to have) and that’s a radio promotions department. The radio promotions department are usually industry veterans that have build relationships with disc jockey’s and Program Directors across the country. Labels pay them to use that influence to get certain records played. There are 4 levels of play on an FM radio station.

Mixshow play: Normally 2-10 spins per week in the DJ mixshow (records played more than 60 seconds count on BDS and Mediabase as spins)

C rotation: 20-30 spins per week (rough numbers)

B rotation: 31-50 spins per week (rough numbers)

A rotation: 51 + spins per week (rough numbers)

The popularity of your song in a particular area or your budget may be enough to get you into mixshows. From there you must invest to push the record into rotation slots. (Remember there are only so many and you are competing with major labels and their budgets for those slots)

How valuable is FM to your push?

Below as you can see, CBS the LARGEST radio corporation is spinning off it’s radio division. XM and internet radio (companies like Sirius, iHeart, etc.) have created SERIOUS competition for the radio market moving forward. Experts don’t know if this spells the death of FM as of now, but with other avenues such as streaming and the other radio mediums the days of FM radio being the place where the masses consumes their music are growing short. Most labels are now using internet radio networks to test records because of the low cost overhead. Spending less than 1k vs. spending 10k to test a record has become more attractive. The bottom line is if you are not being played on FM radio, it most likely means that you have skipped steps in the process on the way to commercial play. Street Djs, Mixtape DJs, internet radio, youtube, spotify, Soundcloud, and other mediums should be SUCCESSFULLY covered and marketed to for an audience WELL before you ever think about radio play. Your “on the ground” presence in college towns and your region should be strong by this point. These avenues build up YOUR RESEARCH and help PD’s decide which records can be placed on the list and started in mixshow play. This is how it works.

If you are not being played in the majority of clubs in your city, if you don’t have fans that purchase your music or tickets to shows, if you do not have the support of tastemakers and DJs in your market, if you don’t have your music registered properly and out on most digital platforms (above), if you have haven’t invested at LEAST $500 into marketing materials for your project, if you haven’t gotten the project properly mixed and mastered, if you haven’t reached out for consultation on how to move your music and make money, THEN YOU ARE NOT PREPARED FOR FM PLAY. My final thought and I will leave the article below is that RADIO is not in business to break artists. EVERY Mid-Major market and it’s artists have the SAME issue with getting on their local FM station. It’s not just YOUR CITY. Take the proper steps to put your music in the best position to be played and by then you won’t need to be. Trust Me.

Why CBS Is Spinning Off Its Radio Business

Nowhere is the profound effect of the internet more apparent than in the radio business.

When William Paley and his family launched CBS CBS +1.98% in 1927, it was as innovative in its day as the worldwide web was in the 90′s. Now, CBS is about to end its almost century-long history with radio by spinning off the entire division. There’s more to the radio business than just one network, of course, but something’s up when the company that developed from the original innovator decides to move on. To find out about the reasons for this and to catch up on what’s new with the “old technology,” I talked to Robert Unmacht, the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of the M Street Corporation, a broadcasting trade publication and market research firm. After 15+ years with M Street, he sold it to Clear Channel Communications, the largest operator of radio and television stations in the United States, now known as iheartMedia.

Unmacht has owned and operated several radio stations, principally in the Pacific Northwest. He’s now a partner at RTK Media in Nashville.

Here’s how our discussion went:

John Navin: Robert, why would CBS want to spin off the radio division after such a long history in the business?
Robert Unmacht: The CEO of CBS, Les Moonves, is not a radio guy. He’s a television guy. He never liked radio much. The fact is, they’ve been looking for a buyer for a long time. Since they haven’t found one, it makes the IPO look like a good idea. It brings in cash, helps to fund the company, then they dispose of the assets. Actually, it hasn’t been the CBS of old days for years — it’s been more like a mix of several different radio companies rolled up into one. Viacom was rolled in, Group W and the San Juan Racing Association was rolled in, Mel Karmazin‘s company — all sorts of radio companies ended up under the CBS group.

Navin: What’s the difference between the radio business now and the radio business in 1996, 20 years ago, just as the internet was becoming popular?

Unmacht: Ultimately, it’s about audio. The internet was radio’s first real competition — that mobile, wireless audio is its first direct competition. Television was basically a spin-off of radio, radio companies began the TV business. They paid for television in its developmental years. Also they say that radio survived 8-tracks, cassette tapes and CD’s, but the internet is different…it can do all that radio can.

With the internet radio shied away and allowed Pandora and Spotify to grow and establish themselves. Radio execs could have fought it — radio can move traffic to a website but there needs to be something there when you arrive. Radio is often bad at marketing itself.

Navin: Pandora and Spotify are about to launch a radio-like services. How does that look for radio?

Unmacht: Well, they have no personalities and no weather. The smart phone experience has taken much of that sort of content, it is like radio in that way –it’s definitely replaced the clock radio. I think of Pandora as radio, Spotify as record collection. You Tube is in there as well — a lot of kids and 18-34′s use those spots as primary place for their music and music news — it may be that radio is no longer primary for it, but teens still discover their favorite hip hop on their favorite hip hop radio stations.

“Classic hits” is a number one radio music format for adults in many markets including NYC. Decade specific, “80s” “90s” “70s” stations failed –is that music that no one wants to listen to? No, but no one listens in decade-defined terms, so classic hits radio which plays songs from all of those years is working. Boomers still like radioLong Live The Sainthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08514343149964858326noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7992591701063926829.post-42641314658253518152016-10-27T11:20:00.000-07:002016-10-27T11:20:05.079-07:00Cobe Selfmade -Extra Growth Vlog 1 Featuring ( Millyz, Bigga Rankin, Big Heff, St. James )Keep up with Cobe while he is in the process of making his first solo independent album self titled "Extra Growth". He sent me his video this week and I must admit the team was HIGHLY impressed at the quality of the music. He has a soulful yet youthful voice that mixes well with ballads. He most recently signed himself and is the owner of his own label Official Music Group, LLC. showing that his business is in order. He released "Korn Kountry" in 2014 w/ DJ Champ, DJ Scream, DJ Black (Hoodrich, The Commission) to great acclaim. He is currently pushing his single "Right Now" in 2015 and I suggest that the people take notice. There is a sleeping GIANT with a GREAT song that will increase the population with his "baby-making music"!
